Roomies

About the Series

Share House is a mini-anthology series created with a large team of over 40 people. There are 6 episodes in total, 6 different stories set in the same house, from the 1970s to 2122. I have never worked in such a big team before, and maintaining a consistent look across the series was both challenging and created many opportunities.

Ep.6, Roomies: Written by Nicole Hutton, Dir. by Jackson Perryman, Prod. Josephine Barwick, Prod. Design by Emilie Ziolkowski, Gaffer: Bailey Fox

  • First Nations Angle

An alien-home invasion sci-fi-horror episode, Roomies is an allegory which explores the lasting impact of colonialism in Australia. This unique angle of First Nation stories in modern dating/relationships was what drew me to this project.

  • Creating the Aesthetic

I was given a lot of creative freedom working in the futuristic/horror sphere. I got to work closely with the director, writer, production designer and gaffer to create a vibrant and contrasty aesthetic for our episode.

  • The Style Bible

I got to participate in creating a series style guide and a visual bible for my episode to refer to when having initial meetings.

Previsualisation / Planning

In pre-production, I also got to utilise my strengths in pre-visualisation through creating the shot-list, storyboard and blocking-diagrams with my director. I have also utilised AI technology to our advantage, using Mid-Journey to generate images to communicate with our gaffer and production designer.

Team Work Makes the Dream Work

With such a big team, we were able to have more creative solutions and make something ‘bigger’ as a series than a one-off format. I had assistants who were able to help me change lens, move the lights around etc. Things were able to happen so much faster than if I were to do all of it myself. I was happy with our result in the end. Not only do I now have more confidence in my vision, I also have a new found appreciation for team-work in filmmaking.

Learning to help other cinematographers also taught me how to be a better camera assistant. In total, I was on set in the studio for 5 of the episodes, alternating between the roles of A CAM & B CAM operator, 1st AC, 2nd Ac and Grip. Working with a more advanced evel kit, such as the Sony FS7, Samyang cine lens kit, dollies and field monitors, I am now more equipped to look for work in the professional field in assisting roles.
